Southeastern Alluvial Plain
Some areas of southeast Missouri's alluvial plain (e.g., Mingo) have been thoroughly explored but the majority of areas have not. This area includes the entire area in the bootheel and the area north and west to the Ozarks.

Northeast Missouri
Northeast Missouri includes historical (and some recent) records for many northern and eastern species. The Mississippi River also provides some large tracts of alluvial habitat. This area basically includes the counties of Clark, Lewis, Marion, Ralls, Pike, Lincoln, and Saint Charles.

Northwest Missouri
Northwest Missouri is known for the loess hills and some interesting western prairie species. The Missouri River also provides some large tracts of alluvial habitat. This area basically includes the counties of Atchison, Holt, Andrew, Buchanan, Platte, and Nodaway.

Ozarks
The Ozark Plateau is a fairly well-defined geographic and geologic area in southern Missouri. It has many characteristic reptile and amphibian species associated with it. Many areas have been thoroughly explored but others are basically unknown.

Southwestern Prairie
The unglaciated prairies in southwestern Missouri have the potential to harbor some interesting western prairie species. Historical records are sparse but habitat here is still fairly intact. This area basically includes the two westernmost tiers of Missouri counties south of Kansas City.
